For largely historical reasons, my wife Jean has an enduring fondness for the wines of Navarro, resulting in a yearly shipment of a mixed case of their wines and grape juices. Among this year's haul was the title wine. I have a love-hate relationship with Gewurz, having cut my teeth on the wines of Alsace back before climate change had robbed them of any delicacy.
Which brings us to the wine in question. Clocking in at a modest 12.9% ABV (and with, I'd guess, about 3-4 g/L sugar), it manages the delicate balancing act between restraint and opulence, retaining plenty of varietal character in a medium-weight package that is framed by fresh acidity. Very food friendly, it paired remarkably well with late night's Shrimp Uggie, made with fresh gulf shrimp that I'd purchased earlier that day from a truck passing through on its way to parts northward (an old tradition of gulf shrimpers traveling up through the Midwest with coolers filled with their product). No sense of heaviness or flabbiness here, just a trip down memory lane to simpler, cooler times...
