WTN: '23 Navarro Dry Gewurztraminer

by Mark Lipton » Fri Dec 06, 2024 12:23 am

For largely historical reasons, my wife Jean has an enduring fondness for the wines of Navarro, resulting in a yearly shipment of a mixed case of their wines and grape juices. Among this year's haul was the title wine. I have a love-hate relationship with Gewurz, having cut my teeth on the wines of Alsace back before climate change had robbed them of any delicacy.

Which brings us to the wine in question. Clocking in at a modest 12.9% ABV (and with, I'd guess, about 3-4 g/L sugar), it manages the delicate balancing act between restraint and opulence, retaining plenty of varietal character in a medium-weight package that is framed by fresh acidity. Very food friendly, it paired remarkably well with late night's Shrimp Uggie, made with fresh gulf shrimp that I'd purchased earlier that day from a truck passing through on its way to parts northward (an old tradition of gulf shrimpers traveling up through the Midwest with coolers filled with their product). No sense of heaviness or flabbiness here, just a trip down memory lane to simpler, cooler times...

Sounds very nice. I remember Navarro Gewurz well (and share the nostalgia for Alsace as it used to be) but haven’t had any in a long time; these days, I usually pick up a Finger Lakes Gewurz to scratch the same itch (Konstantin Frank has been pretty reliable).
cheers, Patchen

That’s always been a very reliable wine. Their dry Muscat is also lovely, not to mention the Rieslings.

I'm not surprised that Dr. Frank makes a good Gewurz. His dry Rieslings (and on Rkatsiteli) have impressed me on those rare occasions when I run across them.
