2014 Pegau Reservee
Disappointed in last week's bottle, I opened another last night to pair with lamb chops and ascertain whether the first was an off bottle. (All purchased on release and cellared by me since.) Good news! This was a much better, fresher wine, middle aged, medium bodied, very little bricking, no funk, with appropriate fruit and spice for origins and age. Not a barnburner vintage, but certainly a very enjoyable wine and not on the brink of death.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well that brings a sigh of relief.

Good to hear, Jenise. That's much more in line with my own experiences.

Yes, I was quite relieved. Funny these unexplainably odd bottles.

Glad it showed better than the first. Easiest explanation is the vagaries of how well natural cork seals (I'm sure you've seen that photo from AWRI with the case of backlit Semillon- range is incredible)

Dale, I get it. We've all had mysteriously off bottles. And when it's the 5th or 6th in the middle of a case you kind of know because your expectations have been normalized by previous bottles, but when the first one you open is off and it's not TCA, and especially with wines of some age, boy it's hard to be optimistic that the next one will be better. I have not seen that photo, though, no.
