WTN: Thanksgiving week- MSR, Burg, Gamay, Champagne

Gnocchi, spinach and mushrooms (maitake, shiitake, cremini)
2012 Roty Gevrey Chambertin
This tastes like Gevrey! Black cherries, espresso, grilled meat. Earthy but with spice and a minerally finish. Very fine for level. B+

Cod, spinach, and chickpeas in a chipotle broth
2015 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett
White nectarine and green plum, nice undercurrent of acid, floral nose with just a hint of incipient petrol, getting in groove. B+

10 (mostly family, one friend) for Thanksgiving dinner. No wine geeks (except me), one pescetarian, we made adjustments. Betsy and I had nostalgic conversation a week ago of the homemade Chex mix of our childhoods, so she made a batch and served as appetizer as folks gathered.

NV Ponson 1er Cru Champagne
Bosc pear, lemon zest, hint of almonds. Clean and refined bubbles, fine value. B+/B

Dinner was herb mayo roasted turkey, Ottolenghi’s black lime salmon, 2 pans dressing (one with oysters, one without), mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes (with marshmallows- yech), salad, biscuits, gravy, pecan pie, butternut squash pie, pumpkin pie.

2015 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Kabinett #3
Tighter and less developed than the Selbach day before, clean with good acids and straightforward profile, but give more time. B for now, should be really good in a few years.,

2017 Marc Morey “Morgeot” Chassagne-Montrachet 1er
Pear, apple blossom, a little hazelnut. Good acids, good length, no signs of oxidation, first bottle (well only bottle) emptied. B+/A-

2020 Terres Blondes Gamay
Brought by a guest. Apparently this is Beaujolais or near but has that geranium thing I find in Loire Gamay. Light with crunchy red fruit, and popular with those less sensitive to the potted plant thing than I am. C+ for me.

2012 Thivin Cote de Brouilly
Black raspberry, peppery spice, moderate acids, no remaining tannin. In a nice place. B+

Good food (too much), good company.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
