- 1990 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (11/24/2024)
The last of three bottles I purchased shortly after release, this was picture perfect aged Auslese. The aromas veer to the autumnal, while also conveying prepared fruit - grilled/seared rather than stewed. Only moderately sweet on entry, the flavors went in so many directions it was hard to keep track. Fresh orange zest, nectarine, lime, mint, sweet corn, honey, allspice, and hay just covers the things that came at me in the first ten minutes. The sweetness persists to the mid-palate, but virtually disappears on the finish, as the ample acidity asserts itself. There’s a lingering flavor of grilled peach, and then a hovering petrichor note that slowly dissipates like a ghost freed from its earthy bonds.
