TN Boillot La-Fleur Petrus Burlotto Clerico Moulin Touchais

by Bill Spohn » Fri Nov 08, 2024 2:30 pm

Notes from the monthly blind tasting wine lunch:

2021 Daydreamer Chardonnay Marcus Ansems – mid colour, and with a nice citrus based nose with some spice elements, good length and slightly reductive.

2011 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese – some colour, good acidity, very smooth and long, sweet but very well balanced.

1996 Jean Boillot & Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles – lightening colour in this one, some iron and also barnyard in the nose and the fruit was holding up well. Excellent length. Good showing at this age.

1993 Ch. La Fleur-Petrus – I brought this one as I figured that as most people are very left bank oriented, they wouldn’t even consider the possibility of it being a year like 93, which was very poor in the Left Bank but had some decent wines from the Right Bank, like this one. Lighter colour than the younger wines and it had some light browning at the edges. Purple plummy fruit still evident in the nose with some Rhonish notes, and some earthy mushroom elements as well. Medium length finish. Good showing for the vintage.

2011 Burlotto Barolo – fairly dark, with a sweet ripe fruit nose and clean acidity. This kept improving in the glass.

2001 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra – a dark wine with an intense nose of dark fruit, slightly dusty, full flavoured and smooth with significant tannins.

1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon – these chenin blancs have always been great values and this was no exception. It was a light amber colour, had a nose that would steer you toward sauternes and a long clean finish. So tasty we kept coming back to it. Not as sweet as a Sauternes but with a persistent similar nose. Excellent.

'93 Pomerol is an interesting blind wine!
I like Burlotto, but prices on Monvigliero and Cannubi are beyond me now, I sounds like I should try the regular Barolo.
Moulin Touchais is always fun.

So sorry we couldn't be there. I had planned on bringing an aged Donnhoff GG and an even-more aged California pinot. Speaking of Burlotto, I've got a mixed six pack to pick up next time I'm in town. I was even able to snag two bottles of their heavenly Sauvignon Blanc.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

2021 Daydreamer Chardonnay Marcus Ansems – A nice but not particularly memorable chardonnay. Medium almost everything - fruit, oak acid.

2011 Selbach-Oster Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese – I have a fair number of 2011 Selbach wines, so I was pleased to see this. Starting to turn golden, this main thing I noticed was the relatively low acid on this otherwise very nice riesling. I know many mentioned this for this vintage, but I was hoping time would be kind. But still a nice riesling, with a mix of stonefruit and tropical fruit and a nice finish. Great with the crab/mango appetizer.

1996 Jean Boillot & Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles – I agree there was some iron in the nose and palate; it was quite a masculine, medium-full bodied pinot. Nice.

1993 Ch. La Fleur-Petrus – This didn't scream Bordeaux at first, but eventually we got there. My first thought was Southern Rhone. Still had some tannins, but overall in a good place now.

2011 Burlotto Barolo – I agree with Bills notes, fairly dark, with a sweet ripe fruit nose and trademark tannins. This was much ready to drink than the next wine!

2001 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra – I brought this. Very dark, full flavoured but with extreme tannins still. I had this wine in 2021, and it was drinking much better then. Is the fruit dropping out already? Either that or it still needs at least 10 years. My last bottle, so I won't find out. It wasn't pleasant drinking on the day.

1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon - My wine of the day. I loved this, even though it was rather mute on the nose, but it had a lovely aged fruit note and a long finish. Dryer than I expected and right in the zone for me. Excellent!

Kind of shocked to see Bill’s take on the Selbach. John - your note is pretty much 2011 in a nutshell.
