by TomHill » Thu Oct 24, 2024 11:35 am

Bruce brought this to our Pig+Fig tasting last night to try:
1. Grosgrain Semillon Skin-Contact WallaWallaVlly (12%; 50% frmtd on skins for 12 days; aged in concrete eggs/amphorae/neutral oak/SS; www.GrosGrainVineyards.com) WallaWalla/WA 2022: Light gold color; fairly strong phenolic/VM/bit resinous/skin-contact some Semillon/figgy/floral some dusty/earthy rather complex quite interesting nose; lightly tart/tangy/metallic fairly rich/lush ripe Semillon/figgy/floral/waxy lightly VM/phenolic/resinous flavor w/ slight tanninc bite; med.long lightly VM/phenolic finish that tracks flavor; speaks strongly of ripe Semillon w/ a deft touch of the VM/phenolic character; shud benefit from 3-6 yrs of age. $30.00

1. This is a wnry run by Matt & Kelly Austin, with which I've had no experience. They have a lot of interesting varieties planted and make a large portfolio of wines, including Nebbiolo. I should like to try more wines from their portfolio.

Tom, I've met and tasted with Matt and encountered his wines in multiple other situations. Largely successful, but it's the whites I've liked/loved so far, especially his semillon (vintages '19 and '20 to be exact) and a mind-blowing white lemberger pet-nat. I've only had three of his reds--a light-med bodied cabernet that was very decent but not especially compelling, a red Rhone blend that I found only so-so, and a grenache that was closer to Sicilian frappato than anything from the Rhone valley. So he's not always hitting the numbers, but with time he'll clearly get things right. I'm surprised to learn from you that he's into Nebbiolo now.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
