- 2012 Turley Petite Sirah Hayne Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (10/20/2024)
From my late father’s cellar, this was part of a significant single bottle per vintage vertical of the Hayne PS. Decided to open this one, as I am saving a lot of the older bottles for a tasting. This was stood up for two weeks, but not decanted. Cork was in excellent condition, and the wine was extremely dark. Lots of purple/deep red. Impenetrable.
Ripe cherry and plum fruit, with a dash of black licorice (or fennel for the licorice averse) on the nose, as well as a bit of earthy funk. The palate maintained a sultry richness, but no evidence of heat despite the notable alcohol. A little bit of acidic “lift” marked the wine, but not to the degree that it would be considered volatile. Tannins still present, but the depth of fruit subsumed them to a background role.
I never really know when to open these Turley Petite Sirahs, but as it turns out, tonight was a good time.
