by TomHill » Sun Oct 20, 2024 6:45 pm

Had these three over the last week:
1. LimerickLane Riesling ColeRanch MendoCnty (12.8%; www.LimerickLaneWines.com) Healdsburg 2018: Med.dark color; very strong R/floral/mango some valve oil bit mineral complex lovely nose; rather tart/tangy bit metallic some Mosel valve oil/R/floral/mango quite lovely R flavor; very long/lingering Mosel valve oil/R/floralk bit petrol/metallic finish that tracks flavor; a really lovely Mosel valve oil bit old-timey Calif R that is evolving very nicely.

3. Hirsch GrunerVeltliner DAC: Kamptal Hirschvergnugen (11.5%; EB; SkurnikWines/NY) Hirsch/Kammern/Kamptal 2022: Med.light gold color; lovely very spicy/GV/white pepper some floral/GV/carnations light earthy/perfumed talcrather fragrant spicy nose; quite tart/tangy bit lean/austere/rather savory/tight some spicy GV/floral/carnations bit white pepper/perfumed talc somewhat wirey/lean/tight bit eviscerated flavor; long finish that tracks flavor; a rather lean/wirey/savory/austere expression of GV; nice nose but disappointing on the palate. $20.00 (Prima IlC)

3. VillaCalcinaia LeRefie IGT: Bianco Toscano (11%; www.ContiCapponi.It; 100% Petite Manseng; MarchettiImprts/ClevelandHeights/OH) Greve in Chianti NV (2023/6): Med.gold color; quite fragrant/floral/R-like/mango light earthy/metallic/mineral bit stony/flinty fairly aromatic nose; quite tart/tangy/metallic/steely strong R-like/floral rather sweet/tangy bit simple flavor; long floral/R-like finish that tracks the flavor; a bit too sweet for my tastes; on the simple R-side & lacks the stony/minerality of Juranon Petite Manseng; a bit too simple & unthrilling; overpriced at $56.00 (KK)

More kisterflick from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Hirsch: This was in my latest IlConsorzio shipment from Prime. General, Frank does an outstanding job of selecting GVs for the shipment. I liked this on one the nose but it was pretty lean/austere on the palate & not offer up much pleasure; age may help it some.

2. This last week, Conti Capponi was here in NM to promote his wines. He did a wine dinner at ArroyoVino and at tasting Sat at Kokmans. I, in general liked his wines quite a bit. He makes a varietal Mammolo and a varietal Occhiorosso....one of the Worlds rarest wines. Both very interesting wines. His Chianti wines tended to be on the hard/structured side but very nice aromatics.

I would agree that age will be a friend to the Hirsch. His wines are always tight/austere on release.
