WTN: the Vieux from here

With rack of lamb coated with a mixture of cinnamon and cumin:

2006 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend
Last of a case and the first opened since 2020. It sure has changed. The tangy red fruits and panopoly of spices have been replaced by darker fruit with hints of espresso and sandalwood. Blind, I'd have bet on this being Bordeaux. Enjoyed it over two hours at which point it was tiring. Time to drink up, methinks.

Sounds like a lovely food/wine match.

Although I am a long time advocate of this house, I skipped the 2006 and uncharacteristically (for me) bought a case of the 2007, which was one of the wines that missed being over ripe and cloying (I did buy 06 Tardieu-Laurent and Usseglio - remind me to open one soon!

Yours sounds a good match with the lamb.

Bill it was a very good match with the lamb. And all 11 prior bottles of this case were magical: medium red fruits with lots of spice and heady black truffle. The lamb with the cinnamon and cumin spice rub was perfect for the wine it used to be. Not bad now, either, but less so. As I said, blind I'd have guessed Bordeaux. I only bought a couple of the 07's and they're gone now. In the cellar last night looking for this I did discover that I have a few more 07's than I believed (in another thread, I told you I had one VT left but apparently I was wrong about that). Will have to look into them soon.

Thanks, Bob! I didn't know who was behind that label--was interesting to read. I hope to try some Nicholas-Jay soon.
