WTN: Fall flavors: 05 Girardin Pommard Épenots

by Patchen Markell » Fri Oct 04, 2024 8:12 pm

Dom. Aleth Girardin 2005 Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots.

Never had this before, think it was a solo bottle I picked up in Chicago a decade ago, but Andrea wanted Pinot to go with an autumnal pasta with pan-roasted delicata squash and wilted greens; I’d been craving Burgundy while she was out of town, and this seemed a promising way to welcome her home. For the first 30 minutes, the nose and palate stared each other down a little suspiciously, with the effusive, floral aromas daring the grippy texture to loosen up and come out to play, which it did in due course, producing a rich, harmonious, complete wine, roses at the top down to licorice and earth at the bottom. If anything, there was a tradeoff of aromatic complexity for texture as the wine fleshed out over two hours, but this wasn’t a loss, just one of those evolutions in the glass that makes for an engaging bottle.

Interesting. Not familiar with that Girardin.

We just got a boatload of Delicata Squash in our CSA share this week.

Apparently (pre-2005) was called Le Royer-Girardin. I wasn’t familiar either, picked this out of a list of stuff being resold by Flickinger, almost certainly on the basis of the Burghound review.

Delicata is currently my second-favorite winter squash but will never displace my true love, the Kabocha.

We will no doubt get a kobocha in the share one of the next three weeks.

I tried Delicata this weekend based on the love here, but a bit too delicate in flavor for me! I prefer the butternut variants and the kabocha.

Otherwise, 05 Burgundy continues to be a moving target but the ones I have are not the blockbuster Wines of the Vintage and have been delicious drinking.
