WTN: Dinner #2 for house guests

by Jenise » Thu Sep 26, 2024 5:18 pm

With tiny tarts of a brie-ish French herb and garlic cheese and sauteed radicchio wrapped in puff pastry:

Blue Mountain Brut (Gold Label) Okanagan Valley Champagne Blend
I'd actually chilled this to go with a picnic lunch atop the magnificent Mt. Baker on Tuesday, but we made a group decision to skip alcohol so it stayed behind. Thank goodness I had chilled it though as I forgot to pull something more significant, so at least we had this to come home to. Though NV, this was from vintage 2017 and had acquired impressive depth rom cellaring a few years. Best buy in sparkling wine that can pass for French that I know of.

With romaine and raw beet salad, followed by filets on potato galettes with a gorgonzola bordelaise:

1999 Château La Couspaude St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend

This bottle, acquired second-hand, was on the downhill side though a pristeenly cellared bottle a friend poured a year ago made me hopeful.

2000 Château Giscours Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend
This was more like it. Immediately appealing and complete upon opening, but I decanted anyway. As it turned out, no sediment to require that and it was actually a fraction less interesting (the tar and leather elements flattened out a bit) an hour later when served. If you own it, don't wait.

After dinner and cookies:

2015 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma County
Dinner was over and the Bordeauxs were done, but my guests felt like just a little more so I pulled this bottle. Seemed overly sweet and fruity after the other wines but in lieu of dessert it actually made sense. My last bottle (I think), and I'm glad to see them gone.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I think that Blue Mountain is one of the best and most consistent sparkling wine producer in BC. I regularly buy the Brut, Blanc de Blancs and Brut Rose.

I have a test batch of the first bubble to be made by another white wine favourite, Terravista. They made a small batch of bubble in small amounts (I have a 3 pack on the way) - will make a mental note to open one with you when it shows up. And as you know, the Daydreamer isn't too shabby either!

I've never laid eyes on the BdB or Rose, though I believe you served the rose once. The quality in every bottle I've ever had over many years is indisputable. And QPR out the wazoo. It's our house everyday champagne and drinks like a lot more.

Would love to taste the TerraVista. I do love the Nichol bubble, which I believe is 100% pinot meunier. Really tasty stuff, and I have also liked the Tantalus BdB.

I bought the 2000 Giscours on futures back in 2001. Ended up trading all of mine for some 2000 Leoville Barton and some 1990s Taylor Fladgate Ports. I should dig out those wines!
