Had dinner at a local French restaurant but took two Italian wines:
1994 Umani Ronchi Pelago - this is an IGT blend of about 50% Montepulciano and the rest cab and merlot. I wondered if it might be a tad long in the tooth but it turned out well. Still dark red with slightly browning edges, it had a very nice nose of dark fruit and cedar box shavings (did any of you have a cedar lined 'moth closet' where parents stowed furs and fabric clothes they didn't want to be preyed upon? I'll never forget the smell). Nice dark fruit flavours and a lengthy finish. I still have four consecutive vintages of this but doubt I'll stage a vertical as I think they would all show almost the same. (Might get around to it, though).
2010 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico - despite the relative youth of this wine it showed a bricky colour at the edges. The nose was mostly floral with some forest floor thrown in and on palate it was smooth with medium length and some nice secondary and tertiary characteristics. and some faint cherry/herb hints in the finish. Very pleasant. If you have it, it is drinking time now.
