For various reasons I have not been in a note writing mood, but these are a few things of note from the last week+.

  • 2006 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga (9/25/2024)
From 375 ml bottle, so not surprising that this was somewhat more evolved than a 750 ml I had not long ago. In this format I would say prime time to be drinking, as the tannins are overtaking the fruit. 750 has better balance for longer cellaring.
  • 2008 Joseph Phelps Insignia - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/24/2024)
Dark and brooding even at age sixteen. I would cite some degree of evolution, but rather than additional complexity, I think it's just becoming more of what it was to begin with - ripe black fruit and dried figs with an overlay of warm vanilla. No indication of decay or imbalance, just stasis, like an expensive, well-made suit that has gone out of style.
  • 2023 Bedrock Wine Co. Ode to Lulu Old Vine Rosé - USA, California (9/24/2024)
Almost too early to drink this. It shows so much ultra-ripe watermelon that it verges on fruit juice. It calms down with some air, and shows more depth to the profile, but I think this needs to over-winter in the cellar to shave off a little energy.
  • 2017 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (9/22/2024)
Evolving nicely, this is lighter than the Rhys single-vineyard wines, but still has ample depth and structure. There's an emerging tea-like element in the aromas/flavors, so perhaps getting as mature as it would be prudent to allow.
