Tried these two for dinner last night:
1. Berger Riesling Ried Spiegel DAC: Kremstal (12.5%; trocken; SkurnikWines/NY/NY) 2021: Med.yellow color; quite attractive R/floral/gardenias/mango rather mineral/flinty/bit steely very aromatic lovely nose; rather tart/tangy bit metallic/steely some floral/R/mango flinty/very Mosel-like wirey flavor; very long/lingering floral/mineral finish that tracks flavor; a terrific example of a Kremstal R at a very attractive price. $25.00 (AV)

Matthiassen 26% Grenache/41% Syrah/33% Mourvedre NapaVlly Helen'sGateVnyd/Rutherford (13%) Napa 2018: Med.dark color; slight herbal/lean fairly strong Grenache/strawberry/Syrah/blackberry/plummy slight Rhonish/CdP/earthy some pencilly/oak fairly pleasant nose; tart/tangy/lean/wirey bit eviscerated bit Rhonish/CdP some blackberry/strawberry/plummy/Syrah/Grenache some pencilly somewhat tannic flavor w/ ample/lean tannins; med. finish that follows flavor; a rather lean/wirey/bit eviscerated red Rhone very much in te SteveMatthiasson style; would be much more attractive w/ more fruit & extract; needs more age because of the tannins but not sure it's going anywhere.

1. I generally like Steve Matthiasson wines, the whites much more than the reds. He tends to make a pick-early/lower alcohol style of wine. I like his Refosco & Schioppettino quite a lot. But his Merlot & Cabs not so much...just too lean & eviscerated. The nose on this red was fine, but not very attractive on the palate. Tastes like a Calif Rhone made by SteveMatthiasson.
