WTN: Brancott Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023

by Peter May » Sat Sep 21, 2024 12:28 pm

So it was Friday yesterday and with our plaice Joan twisted the screwcap off
Brancott Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Brancott is one of the brands Joan will alternate with her favourite Villa Maria.

It's classic NZ Marlborough; clean, crisp, bone dry and smells like new-mown grass with a citrus twist. White wine for red wine drinkers!

We've been drinking it since the winery was called Montana but that name caused problems in the US market so they called it Brancott (after one of their vineyards) for the US market then later decided to change the name to Brancott universally. I can live with that, but I can't stand the new label that looks like a cheap supermarket own label.

I've seen it around and ignored it for the reason you say: it looks like a cheap industrial quaffer.

It's not cheap, but as for being a quaffer, we think the bottles are getting smaller!!

I'd say yes and no to that, Jenise. Yes, it's NZ's largest winery operation, so their version of Gallo (and Villa Maria is the second-largest). My experience with them, however, is that they are still quality-oriented and put out wines at various price points and quality levels. "Brancott Estate" is their single vineyard offering, Stoneleigh being a lower-level offering. They are now part of Pernod Ricard. For real industrial quaffers, look to the Constellation brands in NZ: Kim Crawford and Selaks, among others.
