WTN: Should've stayed Lost

by Jenise » Fri Sep 13, 2024 3:46 pm

Took this to a friend's to pair with lamb chops and pasta in a red sauce:

2020 Idlewild Barbera Lost Hills Ranch Mendocino County
Deep purple with bold and plummy dark fruits. There's an essence of barbera you can recognize (or so you tell yourself), but without the rustic exuberance and juicy red fruit of it's Italian cousins it drinks more like a clumsy cabernet. Didn't hate it, in fact it's a fairly good wine in most respects--tasty, balanced, very drinkable--but it's just not Italian enough and at $40 I would not buy again. (In fact I didn't buy it in the first place, after tasting at the winery I requested they leave it out of my club shipment and they sent it anyway.)
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I am not sure what Sam and Tom are up to, but they sure seem to have lost the recipe.

I didn't stay in the Club after the second shipment. That experience reinforced everything that made me not want to be in clubs in the first place. I made an exception here but quickly regretted it. I get that they work for some people, but it's not me.

Yeah, there aren't many wineries that are so consistent across the board that I'm willing to buy untasted*. I have liked some Idlewild wines in the past, but haven't tasted any of their recent offerings. David's comment sounds quite discouraging.

* If Chevillon or Baudry had ever started a club, that might have changed my attitude

Chevillon or Baudry? I'd be right there with you with Baudry, but much as I love love LOVE Chevillon rouges the two whites I bought somewhat recently were both dogs. Foillard might be a candidate, but even then I'd want to opt out of vintages like '18.

Clubs work for people who don't like to shop, love certainty, and aren't as picky as most of us here. Or lonely people who need the thrill of deliveries. I'm the opposite--even good wine from familiar sources would eventually be unwelcome. The last thing I need to lose is having the room in my cerllar to try new things.

FWIW, I am having the 2020 Cortese tonight, and it’s seriously good wine.
