WTN: Dull Sauvignon from Touraine

by Tim York » Thu Sep 12, 2024 10:35 am

The Marionnet estate is located about 30 km south east of Blois, well outside the more noble wine areas in Touraine, such as Vouvray, Montlouis, Chinon and Bourgueil. Henry Marionnet and his family have some notable cuvées from Gamay, Sauvignon, Côt and Romorantin ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines as well as some more entry level ones from Gamay and SB conventionally grafted plants. I usually like their modestly priced Gamay cuvées but I don't think I'll get any more of this SB, at least in the 2023 vintage.

2023 Domaine de la Charmoise Sauvignon Blanc Touraine - France, Loire Valley, Touraine (10/09/2024)
This is agreeable with Sauvignon character in a soft register - fruit less citrus than some but grapefruit bitterness towards the finish and less minerality than further upstream. The Marionnet family does a good job with its Gamay cuvées and an excellent Romorantin but this entry level SB is a bit lacking in personality. Quite good.

Don't know this producer, but you note (basically adequate but no need to buy more) is usually my reaction to Touraine Sauvignon Blanc (at least since Clos Roche Blanche shut down).

Agreed. My best memories of Touraine Sauvignon Blanc are basic wines drunk in the region with local cheeses (and the local air). Great times, but I don't even attempt to replicate in the US.

Same with but one recent exception, Mary Taylor's Touraine.

And Tim, did you really mean "quite good"? The "dull" in your title and other words in your description don't send that message.
