Three Prunents/Nebbiolos from Valli Ossolane...(short/boring

by TomHill » Tue Sep 03, 2024 2:22 pm

We tried these three at our Pig+Fig tasting last week:
1. cantine Garrone Munaloss VinoRossa (12.5%; KermitLynch; 20% Croatina; 10-50 yr old vines; [www.cantinegarrone.it/](https://www.cantinegarrone.it/)) Domodossola 2022: Med.color; lovely fragrant some Nebb/floral/lilacs bit grapey/Croatina slight earthy light dusty/OV very attractive nose; lightly tart light floral/Nebb/lilacs bit earthy/dusty/OV fairly smooth/lush quite attractive flavor w/ light gentle tannins; fairly long finish that follows flavor; quite a lovely expression of Nebb that speaks of high-altitude Nebb like from the Val d'Aosta and not the more delicate character of many Piemonte Nebbs; ; attractive price at $29.00 (KL)

2. cantine Garrone Prunent Dd'OC: Valli Ossolane Nebbiolo Superiore (13.5%; 30-100 yr old vines; KermitLynch/Berkeley) Cantine Garrone/Domodossola 2021: Med.dark color; lovely very fragrant Nebb/floral/lilacs/violets very perfumed light tarry/pungent very classic high-altitude Nebb beautiful nose; quite tart/tangy some tannic some Nebb/floral/lilacs/violets bit pungent/tarry somewhat hard/lean quite tangy flavor w/ some hard/bitey tannins; very long/lingering classic Nebb finish that follows flavor; a quite lovely floral/lilacs/Nebb wine but a bit hard/tannic on the palate; needs another 2-6 yrs of age yet to soften tannins. $45.00 (KL)

3. cantine Garrone IO Prunent diecibrente Dd'OC: Valli Ossolane Nebbiolo Superiore (13.5%; #107 of 2594; Plntd: 1933) Domodossola 2020: Med.dark color; very strong Nebb/floral/lilacs/violets/rose petal fairly pungent/tarry almost Syrah/blackberry/Rhonish not as high-toned as mose Piemonte Nebbs fairly intense beautiful nose; lightly tart/tangy very floral/perfumed/Nebb/lilacs/violets/rose petal quite rich/lush somewhat tarry/pungent rather dusty/OV/bit earthy complex flavor w/ ample hard tannins; very long/lingering very floral/perfumed finish that tracks flavor; a beautiful perfumed/floral very rich structured Nebb that needs 3-8 yrs of age; almost Rhonish in its intensity; a beautiful unusual expression of Nebb; not out of line for B/B pricing. $59.00 (KL)

More lipplebrot from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The Valli Ossolane is the most Northern part of the Piemonte. A valley that pokes right up to the Swiss border. Prunent is the local name for the Nebbiolo grape. It is believed to be a grandfather clone of Nebbiolo. There is some claim that the Valli was the origin of Nebbiolo. By DNA, the parents of Nebbiolo are unknown. It was documented there about 1305, making it one of the earliest references to Nebbiolo in existence.
I loved all three of these Prunents. Particularly the IO because of its more intense character reminded almost Rhonish in character. These three did not show a lot of the high-toned/delicate character you find in B/B. They reminded me a lot of Nebbs from the Val d'Aosta in their greater intensity.
If you've not tried a Nebb from Valli Ossolane, they are definitely worth checking out.

I picked up a bottle of the Superiore just recently so your notes are timely, Tom.
