1997 Finca Flichman Dedicado - this Argentine wine is built in the image of big California wines with lots of plush fruit, a fair bit of wood and still quite dark after 27 years. Usually a malbec, cab, merlot blend. Like a big Calcab blend in the nose with some coffee and a fair bit of plummy fruit. A bit of dry tannin at the end indicates that it may have been a tannin monster in youth. Not my style, but many would enjoy this sort of wine. Subtlety is not a strength of the wine - still in your face at this age. My last bottle. SWMBO will not be disappointed that she was out for dinner tonight! 14% alcohol and monolithic.

In general, I have found Argentine reds to be similar to this. Flaunting bigness and often with very toasted oak--all the better for serving with the wood-fired grilled food so popular there, one might suppose. Subtlety and finesse do not seem to be a virtue in Argentina, though I understand things are improving.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
