A dear friend departed

by David M. Bueker » Sat Aug 24, 2024 6:21 pm

I don’t have any details, but I have seen reports that Thor Iverson has passed. I don’t have the words to express the sorrow right now. He was for a long time my best friend in wine (not to mention fellow prog rock aficionado), and as close to a brother as I ever had. Various circumstances caused us to drift apart these last several years, but it didn’t change how much his friendship meant to me.

Sad news indeed, I know how close you were. Many are mourning his loss.

Yes, very tough stuff. I heard snippets about some dramas of his in the broader wine geek world, but never really experienced anything first hand. He was always a super taster and a super wit, and the boards were much poorer once he left.

Too young.

So sorry to hear. Hadn't thought about Thor in years, but he was a clear voice in my early days on WLDG. I'll open a Trimbach this week.

I have already posted on this elsewhere, but his death is truly a loss for us all. He was, in addition to being supremely knowledgeable and witty, incredibly generous with his knowledge, his time and his cellar. I had only a few in-person interactions with him, but they were all infected with his great love of life. I will miss him greatly, though I didn't know him 1/10 as well as you did, David.

Unbelievable, terrible. Thor was one of a handful of folks on the wine internet that I got to know a little bit IRL too, though hadn’t seen him in some years. There were and are others who are one or more of: raucously funny, opinionated, argumentative, passionate, generous, long-winded, eloquent, perceptive, and occasionally annoying in the way that smart, nerdy men can be, but very few who are all of the above, and no one who put them together quite like he did. I can’t believe it.
cheers, Patchen

Perfect, Patchen. In a just world, that statement could lead his obituary.

I met him (and Theresa) once in a WLDG offline in Hunawihr, Alsace, may 2003.
An unforgettable moment: Thor playing on an old piano an incredible rendition of Led Zeppelin Ten Years Gone.
Great taster, great storyteller.
So sad.

By the way, according to the autopsy it was a heart attack.

Boy, that is really a shame that he was young. Thanks for relaying the news from Fracebook.
