WTN: 2017 Markus Ruch - My entrance to Swiss Pinot Noir

by Rahsaan » Wed Aug 14, 2024 12:14 pm

Have been meaning to try these wines for a while, and finally got around to a bottle of 2017 Markus Ruch Pinot Noir Gächlingen Schlemmweg. Smooth and suave. Lots of deep woodsy berry fruit going to the bottom of this wine. But also very elegant and finely-knit and a respectable 12.5% alcohol.

Definitely enjoyable, although probably pushing the limits of value at 71euros DE retail. (I shudder to think of US prices, if it gets there). Still, intriguing enough for me to explore these wines further. And, even if it doesn’t fire on all of my pleasure cylinders, it’s always tough to enter a new wine genre.

Sounds good, but like every Swiss wine I've ever encountered pretty pricey. I assume domestic consumption drives the pricing

That's what they say. Plus the fact that everything in Switzerland is so expensive. Ruch is also apparently one of the top names.

Lyle Fass actually brings in a decent amount of Swiss wine, much of which is fairly priced. And I'm sure those wines are "good". But I haven't yet decided they are what I need to try/buy.

Yes, I guess it's an arms race for all these mailers to grab our attention, and it is their business so they need to make sales. But it's hard to take seriously when you get multiple emails a day from the same retailer figuring out a million different ways to spin this producer/wine as The Best Thing.
