  • 2001 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel - Germany, Nahe (8/11/2024)
Three years ago I opened a bottle of this, and compared it to a peach upside-down cake. It had all those fruit and sweet tones that made it just luscious. This bottle, which my wife and I carefully parceled out after dinner for two evenings was so much more. The baseline descriptors did not change much, but this bottle had an extra dimension where it switched to high definition, with each element enhanced and brightened - more freshness and a finish that went on and on. Utterly enthralling.

Sounds great. Wonderful when that happens. I suppose you might attribute that to the extra age? But often it's just the chance of bottle variation, which is great when it favors us with the extra dimensional showings, but of course it's hard to predict...

Very hard, and especially from half bottle which is always (IME) more variable.
