What is the meaning/history of the word sauvignon

I have always without justification figured it was from the french word sauvage, therefore it meant savage or wild. Can anyone give me the straight skinny?

Bob, you pretty much got it in one ... most experts agree that "Sauvignon" (Cabernet and Blanc) was named because it originated as a wild grape, as opposed to one developed in the vineyards.
