More jikkersnort from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. A couple who used to be members in my wine group did a visit to VillaCalcinaia several weeks ago and sang the praises of the wines they tasted there. They related that ContiCapponi w/ be visiting Pojoaque the next week & I should meet him. It turned out that the Count had his dates wrong & it's not until Oct 17-19 that he'll be in NM.
Mammolo is a grape variety found originally in Tuscany where it is used as a blending grape that contributes its perfume to Chiantis. It was transported to Corsica where it grows under the name of Sciaccarello.
Occhiororosso is a very rare grape and an exclusive cultivar of VillaCalcinaia. Occhiorosso was discovered by Roberto Bandinelli, a professor at the University of Florence. Bandinelli found out about Occhiorosso thanks to an elderly lady, who showed him around some old vineyards. How the cultivar got from him to VillaCalcinaia as an exclusive is a story yet to be told. This is a grape that is not to be confused w/ Occhiorogrosso. There's very little info out there on this grape.
I was far more impressed by the Mammolo & the Occhiororosso than the Sangio-based Chianti. They had a very non-Tuscan richness & perfume to them that reminded me a lot of Calif reds. In particular, I was mightly impressed by the Occhiororosso. I would like to see this propagated in Calif where it would make World-class Occhiororosso.
Overall, I was impressed by the VillaCalcinaia wines & hope to try others from their portfolio when the Count is here in NM in Oct 17-19.
