WTN: The faces of Weiss

by Rahsaan » Sat Aug 10, 2024 2:02 am

I often think of Weiss Burgunder as broad and neutral, leaning towards a limp floral puddle in the mouth, and rather boring. Some of the more ambitious versions turn that on its head with creamy depth and riper fruit flavors, which can be good. But here we have two of the newer winemakers working in a more linear and energetic style, which is also much appreciated.

I very much enjoyed the vigor of the 2021 Saalwächter Weisser Burgunder. Intense fruit but with crisp 2021 structure and so so lively in the mouth. A very nice rendition of a straightforward wine that was perfect for dinner.

Things were a bit more complicated with the 2018 Wasenhaus Möhlin Weissburgunder, which had pungent 2018 fruit (and maybe some wood influences?) but then the linear elegant structure of Wasenhaus. It didn't all come together as a package for me, but it was still an interesting interpretation. And it was the first time my friend had tasted Wasenhaus, which he found very impressive. So that was nice for him!

Good notes. I like Weissburgunder/Pinot Blanc. My go to is actually Austria and a producer in Oregon.

Yes, I am slowly trying to branch out beyond my usual German riesling focus to get more into silvaner and weissburgunder. But then of course there are all the options in the other countries!

I fid that I rarely buy pinot blanc, mostly because it just isn't all that common, I have all of 3 wines, a fairly current BC offering, a Luxembourg bubbly, and a 1994 P.J. Valckenberg Bereich Wonnegau Weissburgunder Madonna Eiswein that I had forgotten I had (375 ml.) that I better open very soon, crossing my fingers......

I should pay it more attention given the locally made wines that use that grape.

Yes, it's probably time to check on that one. Hopefully you get a nice experience!
