WTN: Wachau in Kremstal, Burg in Champagne, Loire, Morgon

by Dale Williams » Sun Aug 04, 2024 2:41 pm

Thursday a haddock stew with shiitakes in a miso-dashi broth
2011 Knoll Pfaffenberg Steiner Selection Riesling.
Snappy, nectarine and citrus, gingery spice. Long rocky finish. B+

Friday Char Kay Teow (Singapore rice noodles with shrimp, chicken, fish cake, bok choy and sprouts
2023 Baudry Chinon Rose
Very fruit sweet, cherries and raspberries, good acids, herby. Good, but maybe not most taut rendition of this, I actually like more by itself than with food, not the norm. B

Saturday oysters, grilled yellowfin with sesame seeds, corn, caprese
NV Valentin Leflaive 15-50 Mesnil sur Oger Extra Brut Champagne (2015 base, 5 g/l dosage)
Pear and almond, chalk, elegant mousse and long minerally finish. A little sceptical of Burgundians making Champagne, but this is pretty convincing. B+/A-

2015 Foillard Corcelette Morgon
The ripeness of the vintage is here, but it's quite balanced. Rich black cherry and plum, coffee and a touch of cocoa, some black pepper. Velvety texture, long finish, B++

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

2023 a “solar” vintage in the Loire?

2023 sounds like a complicated vintage all over Europe, which means lots of variation and potential for marketing to trumpet the Unique Brilliance of whatever is being sold. But there were challenges. Cold wet July, heatwave in August and then more rains in September, broadly put. So the heatwave really baked in some solar vintage character, but then the potential for rot from September rains complicated things.

Sounds like a decent vintage for the start of my not buying phase.

Don't worry. Depending on the region/specific wine, I'm sure some 2021/22 wines will be released in the upcoming months and someone can try to tempt you with the glories of those vintages!
