The dog days of summer dragging down my wines

by David M. Bueker » Sat Aug 03, 2024 11:07 am

It has been a disgustingly hot and humid summer. We have central a/c, but somehow the weather still saps the spark out of a glass of wine. I’ve had a number of good bottles lately, but nothing inspired me to make a note. Need some cooler or at least drier weather to bring back the life/joy.

Anybody else feel like the summer weather has been a drag on enjoying a glass of wine?

Absolutely agree. Although it also makes one appreciate a chilled glass of simple white or rose wine more.

Agreed. My solution to the heat and humidity, as a cyclist, is to start my rides by 6am, but I don't think that's gonna work with wine.

Berlin has been warm but not crazy hot, so I haven't been afflicted these past weeks.

But, I do appreciate the sentiment and very much agree that AC cannot correct everything going on outside. The intense days of East Coast US summer often do not feel like the time for the finer wines. All part of the cycle...

I am looking forward to a day not so far away where the high is in the 60s, and I open a Chateauneuf du Pape and watch the leaves fall.

FWIW, the 2021 Corison ‘Corazón’ Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé was exactly the vinous antidote I needed. Fresh and bright with nothing remotely tutti fruti it nicely straddled the line between fun and serious.

Now if the weather would just cool down!

Certainly this is a time of year, even in semi-coastal California where it never gets truly muggy, that I am grateful to have so many whites and lighter wines in the cellar. K&L was doing a closeout of the Vin Gris de Cigare rose for $6 a bottle and that has been extremely refreshing despite being a quality wine. I've also really enjoyed a Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schossberg Kabinett and Spatlese, but the nod goes to the Kabinett for verve.

How’d all those Aussie reds do in the heat?

Quite well. The heat had broken, and the host keeps a very cool house.

I must admit that when the outside temperature rises, I am more likely to seek refuge in some in-cellar chores. It has been hitting close to 30 C. around here and the 13C of the cellar almost makes me want to take a chair and reading light in there! (For any readers from the the United States, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, that is 86 F.)

We've had a terrific summer weather wise. Evenings are cool enough for reds and warm enough for anything of any other color including fine champagne. Can't wait to celebrate getting these stitches out with a cool glass of Comtes 2007.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
