WTN - Fizz-les: Cava Gran Reserva

by Peter May » Fri Aug 02, 2024 6:51 am

Nice surprise to have a wine that fits this month's Wine Focus in our wine tasting group's line up last night.

It was Anthony's turn to host this month and we started with this fizz, sat in his back garden with crisps and nuts to nibble, before we moved inside to taste the rest. There were only seven of us and seven wines, so there was plenty if we wanted to go back and taste again.

This month's theme was The Generation Series 2, one-off wines celebrating the Wine Society's 150th anniversary. The three Generation Series feature wines inspired by or recreated from a 50 year period in the Society's life. Series 2 covers the years 1924 to 1974.

The Wine Society's Generation Series Cava Gran Reserva Brut 2019

Made by family owned estate Sumarroca with free run juice from their own estate grown grapes, then aged on its lees for more than two years, plus a further year in bottle.

Very lively when opened, just as well we were in the garden because the cork flew out and hit a distant fence with a retort and the wine foamed in glasses. Strong flow of tiny bubbles.

Apples on first taste, then nectarines and plums with a bready finish. Elegant and a world apart from the brash cheap Cavas found in supermarkets. For me, a little lacking in acidity but the second highest scoring wine of the evening. Actually a Brut Nature, and made from the traditional blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo

A lot of the higher end (that’s $18-$25 in the U.S.) Cava seems to be Brut Nature these days. Laura and I drink a good bit from Pere Mata, and it’s almost all Brut Nature.

That's interesting, David. It indicates America's palate is moving to drier wines. Moet & Chandon made White Label, a sweeter Champagne just for the US market and I think they don't any more.
