Wine Focus August 2024: Before summer fizz-les

by David M. Bueker » Wed Jul 31, 2024 11:18 am

We're approaching those last few weeks of summer. Vacations are still going strong, but Labor Day (the traditional end of summer in the USA) is only 5 weeks away. august is sometimes called the dog days of summer. The humidity often seems higher, making summer's heat that much more oppressive.

What's the perfect antidote to heat and humidity (other than a crisp lager or a G&T!) - sparkling wine! But we won't be doing Champagne this month, but rather non-Champagne sparklers, whether Cava, Prosecco, Cremant, New Zealand Pet-Nat (there must be some!), or some U.S. Sparkling Wine (among other things). Doesn't matter where it's from, other than Champagne*, and doesn't matter what it's called. Don't let summer fizzle out without a bottle or two of bubbly this month.

*Champagne is OK, but we're looking to go outside the tried and true king of bubbly.

Good 'un.

I open a bottle of fizz every Sunday for a glass each as aperitif.(and the rest on Monday & Tuesday)
Apart from Champagne I currently have Cremant from 3 other French regions, plus
MCC from South Africa
Cava from Italy
ESW from England
and bottle fermented from California

but, we'll be away for two weeks on a cruise from Amsterdam to Basel and having a glass of Champagne every night.
