by TomHill » Wed Jul 24, 2024 12:37 pm

Tried these two Ramatos the other night:
1. Forlorn-Hope Dragone Ramato PinotGris RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (11.93%) 2015: Lightly red/rose some browning color; very strong graham cracker/honey grahams/nilla wafers bit earthy/dusty very slight VM/resiny bit smokey lightly floral/PG rather complex nose; lightly tart/tangy slight tannic fairly honeyed/honey grahams/nilla wafrers slight earthy/dusty light floral/PG rather smooth/lush fairly complex flavor w/ light tannins; very long lightly tannic finish that follows flavor;a very interesting fairly mature Ramato that should go another 2-5 yrs, maybe even longer; bit of a tangy tannic bite in the finish.

2. Forlorn-Hope Dragone Ramato PinotGris RorickHeritageVnyd/CalaverasCnty/SierraFoothills (11.42%) Murphys 2020: Light red slightly browning color; some phenolic/VM somewhat honeyed/vanilla wafers/honeygrahams bit rose petal/floral rather complex interesting nose; fairly tart/tangy some phenolic/VM/resiny some honeyed/honey grahams/nilla wafers lightly floral/PG/rose petals quite interesting flavor; very long lightly tart finish that follows flavor; quite an interesting PG/ramato that's lost a lot of the early VM/austere character & developing quite nicely w/ good complexity; quite a nice lightly floral PG/ramato; should go on for another 4-8 yrs.

We tried this Sat night w/ guests:

1. **Forlorn-Hope DragoneRamato PinotGris RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (11.93%) Murphys 2015**: Light bricked red color; some phenolic/resiny/apple cidery light floral/appley/apple blossom slight earthy/dusty rather fragrant lovely nose; rather lean/hard/austere some phenolic/resiny/cidery some appley/floral/apple blossom/PG rather exotic/complex flavor w/ light somewhat astringent/bitey tannins; very long/lingering lightly phenolic/resiny/apple cider some PG/appley/floral rather tart/tangy bit metallic somewhat complex finish w/ light bitey tannins; not much fun to taste by itself but really needs food. $30.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:

1. Ramato: This is the classic “rose” of Friuli made w/ skin-contact from PinotGris. This edition had a nice balance of phenolic and fragrant/fruit character. It was not much fun to taste by itself. But we had it w/ classic ChoucrouteGarni a 'la Alsacienne, a dish that is all about getting as much fat into your body w/ each bite as you can. This wine really sang w/ that dish.

I like Mat Rorick's PG/ramatos quite a lot. They show a lot more floral/PG character and are not as austere/tannic/resinous character that many young Ramatos show. And they invariably develop quite nicely w/ age.

Interesting. I have yet to have a Ramato, at least under that name, that I liked. Resin with some cardboardy flavors just tastes off to me.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
