WTN: TdF / Chevillon

by Patchen Markell » Wed Jul 17, 2024 10:49 am

Dom. Robert Chevillon 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru "Vaucrains."

Here, I'll make this a Tour de France post: back in the sweet spot of the early aughts, when I was newly employed as an assistant professor, my income sprinted forward with a surprising burst of power that briefly allowed me to overtake Chevillon down in the valley, but on the climb up the Rue de Chaux past the 1er cru vineyards, Chevillon's prices took off like a rocket and left me holding only a small stash of 2001 and 2002s (and a couple of 2010s, but let's not ruin the metaphor). Last night, in a celebratory mood despite the state of the world, I opened one.... and it was a really beautiful bottle. Expressive nose from the outset, at the intersection of red meat, pit fruit (think black cherries), and flowers. Lush and velvety texture, very long, sustained by just the right bit of tannic edge. What's impressive here is the combination of density and forthcomingness: you don't sense it's holding anything back, just that it has slightly more to offer than you can quite wrap your senses around. This was well worth the two decade wait.

That's lovely. I started with Chevillon a couple of years earlier (still have a few 1999-2001 Vaucrains), but ended a little sooner (2007) when they topped $100 for the better 1ers. The wines are such a joy, even the Bourgogne with a few years. I wonder what they are like now, with the more extreme effects of climate change, and even more vineyard management/wine making improvements of the last decade+.

Meadows still seems keen on them, but the reviews do make it sound like they’ve become more muscular in recent warm vintages.

Fun note. I'm a fan--well, of the reds, anyway. I discovered them in the same time frame you did.

Count me as a Chevillon fan, too--from the late 1990s. Adored the wines but the prices left my comfort zone after the turn of the century.

Big Chevillon fan. Used to buy the line, after 2005-2007 the big 3 got too expensive, but still bought some lesser 1ers (Roncieres, Pruliers, etc) and the village VV till 2014. Have a few from 90s left, only 2002s I have left are single mags of each of the big 3 (maybe my next big bday?). But decent #s of '05s, '07s, 08s.
