WTN: Good wines- CdBrouilly, Provence,Santonri, Champagne

by Dale Williams » Tue Jul 02, 2024 3:19 pm

Friday was salmon with dried lime, great dish, just had with leftover Roses (Bastide Blanche and Cotat)

Saturday oysters, turbot, pasta with pesto, and salad
2022 Hatzidakis Familia Assyrtiko (Santorini). Lemon, Granny Smith, a bit of seashell. B/B+

Sunday we had Betsy’s sister and BIL over

Smoked mackerel with horseradish cream , prosciutto and mango
NV Ponson 1er Cru Champagne
Mostly (70% Meunier). Pear, lemon curd, a touch of hazelnut. Long, full, and with nice texture and long chalky finish. B++

Tomato salad with potstickers and chili crisp (as Cal Said “Who thought of this? It shouldn’t work but it does”
Salt and pepper pork chops with vinegared scallions, rice, salad

2021 JP Brun Cote de Brouilly
Lovely and classic Beaujolais, strawberries and pomegranate, smoke, and herbs. There’s some tannin but really approachable, though sure it could age. Quite fun. Thanks to Rahsaan for reminding me how much I like Brun. B+/A-

Cheese and ice cream

Chicken meatballs (garlic/herb) cooked with Swiss Chard and preserved lemons. Wine was the 2023 Turenne “Camille” Rose (Cotes de Provence). Pale, refreshing, light bodied but with good persistence. Raspberry and a hint of strawberry, blood orange, and nice minerally finish. Easy to like. B/B+

Will be no wines tonight as we head to Newark airport.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I'm the same. At least for long-distance flights, and especially transatlantic flights. At this age, I don't even like to drink the day before those flights, so I can be properly rested!

Same here. I now suffer very little jet lag when traveling internationally as a result of careful rationing of food, caffeine, alcohol and sleep. Recent travel to/from Italy (see other post) was a case in point: hit the ground running in Milan with little disruption to sleep and again on return to O'Hare and home. This strategy will be put to the test in a couple of weeks when I travel to China.

Good for you. Although the first three of those things are a lot easier to control than the fourth!

One thing that vexes me about flying an American carrier to Europe: when flights depart O'Hare at 9 pm local time, why do they insist on serving a meal an hour into the flight? It's past dinner time in the US and it's the dead of night in Europe. All I'm trying to do is sleep and they don't dim the cabin lights and insist on serving a meal :?

Exactly Mark! I have an overnight flight to São Paulo next month, and they will be serving dinner at 10 PM. Bleh!

Of course that’s sort of a preview of South America!

BTW, David, belated congrats on the retirement. IIRC, you're younger than I am, so I haz a touch of jealousy.
