New wine accessory I love

by Jenise » Tue Jul 02, 2024 1:24 pm

These guys:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BKK81SF?re ... tails&th=1

So you're getting ready for an event and you're prepping multiple bottles of wine for transport. You remove the cork and splash decant, remove sediment and return to the bottles. Then you re-cork. But sometimes the cork you removed doesn't fit and you stand there and fuss with other corks to find a good fit, but the cork doesn't always go all the way in and it protrudes into the lid of your carrier. Or maybe you're just capping them for later at home. Either way, you can skip that entire hassle with these guys: these are your new cork. Just put one on and go.

Bill Spohn discovered them recently and shared at his last lunch, and I came home and ordered some right away. Bob was all "oh we don't need those" until last weekend when I prepped three bottles for the pinot noir tasting I posted about. Immediately he went "now I get it" and by now others at the tasting will have ordered some too. They make SO much sense.

I'm a big double decanter before travel, and usually use a stopper - if cork won't go in (and I don't like reversing, can have funky stuff on outside).
I have some flat ones like that but if a Bdx or Burg bottle these will go on and fit in my carry bag.

Confession: I have one of those. Think it was a gift. I use it for hilarity.

Yep, I have a few of those, too, Jenise, though living as I do in the hinterlands I find very few opportunities to use them for double-decanting.

Which hinterlands are you in these days? I recall somewhere in the northern midwest. And you have a little vineyard now--how's it doing?

We're still in Indiana, but my Gamay vines in Michigan are now 2.5 years old and bearing fruit for the first time. I'll be spending time with them starting next week, though whether we get a harvest this year is still problematic AFAIC.

Those caps seal really well - after our last lunch I used them on a couple of bottles I put in the fridge, lying down and no seepage at all. They do require some minor effort to peel off if they have been in place for awhile but that beats the fact that they don't leak!

Bill, I wouldn't have dared lay one down, but there are times I would wish to. Good to know!

Mark, hope your vineyard produces. If you get a decent crop will you be the winemaker?

Yup, that's the plan. Have already got a few people volunteering to mentor me.

I have a bunch of these (different brand, though). I use a Coravin, now that Linda and I have trouble finishing a bottle at one sitting, which drills a tiny hole in the cork that occasionally leaks (especially if I leave the bottle a little pressurized). This stops the leak. I occasionally use it to replace a cork that won't fit back in the bottle, but haven't dared to lay it down.

Now that's an interesting use. I have a Coravin--was given one--but have never used it. Mostly because I have not been impressed with wines that others used coravin on--they do oxidize. I can see where these would make a big difference.
