Domaine Jamet 2013 Côte-Rôtie. Looking for another Syrah last night I saw that I somehow accumulated five of these (for my first couple of decades in this hobby I was too interested in too many things to buy more than a few bottles of anything; I suspect this was the result of two separate purchases of three and two. I sometimes regret this now, but the tradeoff was also worth it).
Anyway: Deep ruby, beguiling nose of smoked meat and dark fruit. The palate leans similarly dark, taking on weight and complexity in the glass, with a tarry note emerging in the second hour. Great texture, balance, and energy, despite being so many layers of shadow. No need to wait and no need to rush.
Interesting to have this relatively close on the heels of the Reynvaan, because it underscores both the affinity in style and the difference (which has nothing to do with flabbiness): if paired, the sunny, sweet fruit of the Reynvaan would have marked it to me as West Coast for sure, while the first sip of the Jamet was, I dunno, like being yanked into the Upside Down (if it's possible to mean that "in a good way").
Also saving a couple of small glasses for tomorrow, trying out one of the new preservation tools I've acquired to help facilitate my transition to extreme moderation (the eto decanter).
cheers, Patchen
