Bog-Standard Chablis???

by TomHill » Tue Jun 18, 2024 7:30 pm

Was reading the latest WineSphincter article on Chard and came across the term “bog-standard Chablis”.
Can anyone tell me what “bog-standard Chard” is?? I gather it’s not a complimentary term??

It’s British slang that means “ordinary,” in a faintly perjorative way. Online etymologies will tell you that it might be a corruption of “box standard,” which was a designation of a particular model of a popular toy, or something like that, which also came in a “box deluxe.”

If (as I am) you're fascinated by the phenomenon of Britain and the US being "two great peoples separated by a common language", check out the "Unusual Words" topic in the Friends and Fun forum area.

Hey, I have a PhD in meaningless trivia. It’s not as if I just looked that etymology up on the google.
