Qualifying for a Wine Tasting???

by TomHill » Wed May 29, 2024 12:01 am

On June 16, www.DeriveSantaFe.com is holding a wine tasting of Natural wines in SantaFe. Of course, as one of the most passionate supporters of the Natural wine movement, I plan to attend.
So I went to their WebPage and ordered my tickee.
Shortly thereafter, I got this e-mail from DeriveSantaFe that before they accept my payment for admission, they need to discuss it among all the Committee members whether I am accepted or declined to attend this tasting!!! This is one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever heard of. “Accepted or Declined”?? Usually, when you sign up for a wine tasting, you pays your $$$ and the tickets are issued.
My acceptance/declination is being discussed by the Committee before they accept my payment. Then I will be told yea or nay. Since I am not a MoW or MS and have zero wine credentials, I fully expect to be declined. So be it.
The Committee discussing my potential attendance to this tasting is the “Committee for Slow Growth Terroir Utopia”. Couldn’t find anything on the Internet about this Committee. Anybody know anything about this Committee or are a member?? Kinda of a pompous name for a Natural Wine Committee.

As anybody ever been vetted for a wine tasting like this before?? All seems pretty strange.

Looking at their “About” page on the site makes it pretty clear that they are all about a certain image, and you had better fit that image. It’s also clear they believe in the manufactured (yes I intended to use that word) zeitgeist of natural wine rather than leaning on its history.

Whew... Joy/Joy. I just got an e-mail notification from Derive 24 that the "Subcommittee for Communal Enrichment and Joy" as given them the go-ahead to accept me as a participant in this tasting of Natural wines on June 16. Whew.... I tossed & turned all night long worrying if I qualified to attend this tasting. And me ....having zero wine credentials. Dodged another bullet!!

Yeah, David....I've always been too hip for these wine boards where you folks babble on&on about terroir & other nonsense.
That the "Subcommittee for Communal Enrichment and Joy" vetted me is prima facie evidence that I am too hip.

Good grief, Tom. This would read like satire if you hadn't included links (of course, it could just be an epic troll on your part). Who the hell are these folks and where did they get their ideas about how to conduct a wine tasting? Sheesh. Think I'll stick to the Wine & Chile Fiesta, TYVM.

"Subcommittee for Communal Enrichment and Joy"? Are they part of the Ministry of Truth?

Check the room number when you attend the tasting. If it's Room 101, don't go in.

E-mail to my wine group...

This is the e-mail I sent out to my wine tasting group. Only a small bit of sarcasm.
Tom

On Sunday, June 16, 12:00-4:00pm, there will be a tasting in SantaFe at the ScottishRite Temple of Natural wines. The several days afore, there will be other Natural wines events here in NM, mostly in SantaFe.
This is a really big event, one of the biggest Natural wine events in the Nation. There will be a bunch of winemakers & importers of Natural wines present to pour their wines.
You can get further info from their WebSite: DeriveSantaFe.com 2
You can also order tickets for the tasting from that same Site. $40/person. Be forewarned, just because you order a ticket does not mean you will be allowed to attend. You have to first be vetted to attend by the “Subcommittee for Communal Enrichment and Joy”, a subcommittee of the prestigious “Committee for Slow Growth Terroir Utopia”. No… I am not making this up!!
To aid their background investigation and vetting process, you should probably include your Library Card # and your LA Coop Membership #. It may help to include a pic of your belly button so they know if it’s an “innie” or an “outie”. If you don’t have a belly button, then you are not a Natural human being & cannot attend a Natural wine event. Because he had no belly button from his immaculate conception, JesusChrist was denied attendance privilege.
Anyway… this is an event you might want to attend so you know what all the excitement over Natural wine is about.

The qualifying thing is weird, and the philosophy/we're so hip website a bit offputting. But a lot of the distributors have really good stuff (Louis Dresser, Selection Massale, Jose Pastor,- Jenny and Francois are a little more doctrinaire, but still have some good producers) as are some of the individual wineries like Clarine and Broc (by reputation). I'd go to the Louis Dressner dinner with Roagna, Baudry, Pinon etc!
