WTN: Burgs, Rieslings, Italians, Cote-Rotie, etc

by Dale Williams » Tue May 21, 2024 6:06 pm

Seabass roasted on a bed of crispy potatoes and green olives, spicy broccolini
2015 Tiberio Pecorino (Colline Pescaresi)
Snappy acids, grapefruit and yellow plum, herby notes, saline finish. Still plenty of life, and interest. B++
Pork chop with hot cherry peppers, pasta, broccoli rabe
2017 Tiberio Montepulciano D'Abruzzo
I’ve generally preferred the Tiberio whites/rose, but this red is pretty nice Ripe cherry, a little anise, a lot of herbs. Juicy and fun. B/B+
Friday grilled some beef bulgogi and trumpet mushrooms, and mixed some overly salty saag paneer from Betsy’s lunch with some unseasoned spinach.
2018 Bertrand Bachelet Hautes Cotes de Beaune
This screams more overripe Pinot than Burgundy,. Flabby and a touch hot (though it says 13.5). I switched to leftover Montepulciano. C+/C
Saturday scored some morels at farmers market, dinner was oysters, lemon sole with morels, asparagus, and scallions, pasta with burrata, sea beans, and sorrel
2016 Hubert Lamy “Le Concis du Champs”-Chassagne-Montrachet
Pear, spring flowers, hint of almond. Rich Chassagne, long finish, but just a little heavy, could use a little more nerve/zip. Still I quite liked. B+/B
Friends over for Sunday dinner on patio,
Smoked duck, smoked salmon
NV Charles Ellner Carte Blanche Brut Champagne
Apple pie, heavy on the dough, nutty, touch sweet. Not what I am looking for, others loved. B-/C+
Butter poached halibut on mizuna

2020 Francois Carillon Bourgogne Cote d’Or blanc
Pear, almond, citrus zest. Good for level. B
2017 Couturier La Cour des Bois Saint Véran
I’m a big 2017 fan, but this seems rather flabby for 2017, and even a little tired. B-/C+

Chicken with Samgyetang flavors (ginseng, jujubes, chestnuts) , rice, salad (Riesling was better than Rhone for the dish, but one guest would have had heart attack if I hadn’t served a red)
1997 Ogier Cote Rotie
Black cherry, mocha, a little smoked meat. Drinking very well. B+/A-
2020 Stefan Muller Trocken Riesling
New producer to me. Nice snap, citrus with minty herbs and a tangy finish, great fun. B++

Grilled pork chops, yellow squash, tangy red cabbage slaw,
2018 Gunderloch Vom Roten Schiefer Trocken Riesling
Good acids for ‘18, pit fruits and ginger, tangy/ B/B+
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I can’t keep track of all the Mullers.

The Ogier sounds especially good. 1997 seems unrated in the northern Rhone.

IIRC, '97 was actually a lot better in the north than the south, but it was the south's experience that got typecast as the norm. Wish I had some of Dale's 97's!
