WTN: GaMay the Fourth - Touraine

The name Marionnet is almost synonymous with Touraine Gamay. As far as I can tell from Googling Domaine Marionnet Père et Fils is run by Jean-Sébastien Marionnet (the son of Henry Marionnet) just like the better known Domaine de la Charmoise. The latter has a very interesting portfolio of wines, including some from ungrafted standard Gamay and Sauvignon blanc vines, but also from Gamay de Bouze, Côt (AKA Malbec) and Romorantin. This is an entry level cuvée at <€7 but already good.

2020 Domaine Marionnet Père et Fils Touraine l'Enclos des charmes - France, Loire Valley, Touraine (18/05/2024)
I don't recall having previously had a Touraine Gamay as old as 4 years. It has lost most of its youthful vibrancy and is showing quite round and polished dark fruit, some pepper and spice and discreet acidity and grip. I'm not sure that I would identify this as coming from Gamay now; more like Syrah? Still good in its way, though.

That is interesting. Dark fruit, presumably from 2020 heat, and far from the 'typical' light Touraine gamay. But, nice that it was 'good in its way'.. (Although I suspect this is one of those wines that tastes better on French soil, preferably as close to the Loire as possible...)

yes, not what I'd think of as Loire gamay profile.
To me (or my circles) it would be the Clos Roche Blanche that is (or was) synonymous with Touraine Gamay. :)
Though personally I always preferred other CRB bottlings (SB, Cot, Cab).
Touraine Gamay often to me has a peculiar aroma (I call potted plant, might be geranium). But sounds like a ripe wine like this wouldn't have.
