WTN: Four New Ridge ATP Reds....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu May 16, 2024 12:43 pm

We tried these new Ridge ATPs last week:
1. Ridge PinotNoir Corralitos GaliVnyd/SantaCrizCnty (14.5%; 48 brls; bttld 4/23; whole-berry frmt; Drk: 3/23-3/28: TG) 2021: Med.dark color; rather earthy/dusty SCM PN/black cherry strong vanilla/Ridge oak slight Burgundian somewhat rustic interesting nose; quite tart/tannic/rather acidic rather coarse/rustic some black cherry/PN/SCM rough/rustic flavor w/ ample rough tannins; med.long rather rough/coarse finish follows flavor; a rather coarse/rustic/rough expression of SCM PN that's not particularly interesting; reminds some of the old CongressSprings or Gemello SCM Pinots; lacks any high-toned PN fruit. $47.00/$42.30 (ATP)
________________
2. Ridge Syrah/Grenache/Mataro LyttonEstate/DryCreekVlly (13.9%; 74% Syrah/17% Grenache/9% Mataro; 55 brls; bttld April 2023; water addition; Drk: 3/23-3/29-3/31: SR) 2021: Very dark/near black color; strong very spicy/blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/ripe/bit peppery slight Rhonish/roasted strong Ridge/oak/toasty some complex lovely Syrah nose; lightly tart/tangy strong blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/ripe/peppery some Rhonish/roasted/smokey bit earthy strong vanilla/oak/smokey some classic LS/spicy flavor w/ some rough tannins; very long/lingering finish that follows flavor; a very good classic Ridge Syrah w/ lots of classic LS spicy character; needs some age yet; one of the better Ridge Syrahs that shows more Rhonish character than before and not just resemples a Syrah made by a Zin producer; very fairly priced at $44.00/$39.60 (ATP)
________________
3. Ridge ManciniRanch RRV/SonomaCnty (14.4%; 61% Carignane/32% Zin/7% AlicanteBouschet; 14 brls; Farmed: Max Reichwage since 2015; Drk: 9/23-9/29-9/30: TG) 2022: Very dark/black color; strong black cherry/Carignane/spicy strong Am.oak/pencilly/vanilla bit licorice slightly rustic/Carignane nose; quite tart/tangy very strong Carignane/black cherry rather dusty/OV strong vanilla/Ridge oak/pencilly classic Ridge Carignane spicy flavor w/ modest hard tannins; very long/lingering strong black cherry/Carignane finish that mimics flavor; much more spicy & dusty/OV Carignane character than the Buchignani Carignane; a very good Ridge Carignane that needs more age. $42.00/$37.80 (ATP)
________________
4. Ridge Zin StoneRanch/AlexVlly/SonomaCnty (15.2%; 2% Carignane/2% PS; 55 brls; bttld March 2023; 14 mo. in brl; Drk: 1/23-?: SR) 2021: Very dark/near black color; fairly intense blackberry/Zin/ripe/boysenberry/spicy some dusty/OV fairly strong Ridge/vanilla/oak not particularly complex nose; bit soft slightly metallic/tangy fairly intense blackberry/ripe/boysenberry modest Ridge/pencilla/vanolla oak bit simple flavor w/ ample bitey tannins; long spicy/blackberry/Zin/boysenberry finish that tracks flavor; a good solid Ridge Zin one step above 3Vllys/EastBench/Ponzo but not up to the LS or Jimsomare level; needs 3-5 rs; nothing really profound or particularly interesting like most AlexVlly Zins. $42.00/$37.80 (ATP)

More zidderfrog from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. An interesting release of ATP reds. As in the past, Ridge doesn't do much w/ PinotNoir & this one is particularly unthrilling. I really liked the MancineRanch Carignane & thought it better than most of their Buchignani versions. And the Syrah was quite good & displayed a lot of LS spicy character.

For a wine labeled Zinfandel:
100% - 2% - 2% = 96% !!

That math even I can do. Just since the zin wasn't there I didn't know if you had missed other minor components.

Ridge just didn't bother to put the 96% Zin on the label. Usually they would.
The Ridge labels are not always that consistent. I would cite they way they express the bottling date.
They vary in their format because that number is often chosen on how well it fits on the label.
