WTN: Gamay the fourth be with you - 2019 Thillardon Chenas

by David M. Bueker » Sat May 04, 2024 7:31 pm

  • 2019 Domaine Thillardon Chénas Les Carrières - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas (5/4/2024)
I suspect that this wine could be controversial. Heck, it could be controversial for me! Some nights I might dump it, but tonight it hit the spot. I had been out for a hike, and needed something alive. This was more than that. It was vibrating at a high frequency almost beyond perception. It had bright fruit, but beyond that it had living energy. I tried to get a more detailed handle on it, but every time I thought I had it in my grasp, like a cat, it jumped away.

Like a cat--perfect analogy. Sounds very interesting.

Definitely interesting, but only if you are in the right mood.

What's the controversial part? The living energy? Lively texture?

I would suspect that some (including me on another night) might find it overly sharp. It's definitely got natty tendencies (notable prickle), but thankfully didn't veer into any of the negative areas of natural wine.

Ah yes. That can be a knife edge where the natty wines slip too far, especially when you factor in transport conditions/storage.

Just looked this up and it's not cheap. Of course still fairly priced in the grand scheme of things and more power to him. But so much great Beaujolais out there. Have been on a JP Brun run recently, such good wines, such fair prices.

I can’t remember the last Brun I had. I used to see them locally, but they disappeared several years ago. I know I still have a mag of 2009 Moulin-a-Vent. I should open it soon.

Rahsaan, any particiular bottlings? JP Brun is prolific. I usually like, but the L'Ancien and blanc are only ones I see regularly, though I have liked Cd Brouilly and Fleurie in past,

Lots of different bottlings around the Nyc area.

In past few weeks, I've had several bottles each of the 2022 Morgon and 2022 CdBrouilly. Such a nice balance with delicate clear fruit but without the carbonic textures, more layers. Seems a perfect middle ground between some of the meatier 'serious' Beaujolais and the ethereal carbonic ones. (Although I do appreciate many styles of Beaujolais)
