WTN: Champagne & Lobster

by David M. Bueker » Mon Apr 15, 2024 4:14 pm

  • NV Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut - France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru (4/14/2024)
From a bottle disgorged way back in November 2018, this was spectacular from the very first sip. Still vibrant, fresh and longer than a Phish concert. I thought I had grabbed a 2020 disgorgement, and got a little shock when I saw the back label. Laura and I like our NVs to get time time in the cellar, and this was a very happy result.

Fantastic with our Maine Lobster dinner.

Sounds great.
Love aging NV.
Lobster here is $18/lb lately, sticker shock.

Yes, this was last weekend's pricing from Dobbs Ferry Lobster Guys (Anthony is a 3rd generation lobsterman)
LOBSTERS
(under 2 pounds)
$18 per pound

LOBSTER ROLLS
$24.95 per piece
All Weekend / Call for Hours

LOBSTERS
(over 2 pounds)
$19.50 per pound

Hmart is now $16/lb, supermarkets are $18-20. Last summer and fall there were fairly frequent sales at $10/lb at Hmart and others, I think one or two weeks Shoprite had $8/lb.
During lobster glut years I got used to $7-8, with not infrequent $5/lb sales at Stew Leonards. A couple of times $4/lb , I think one of those weeks we had steamed lobsters, butter poached lobster with corn and tomatoes, and lobster and nduja over pasta. If just 2 of us we typically got 3 1.5ers. Once it gets over $10/lb it's one lobster per person, and less frequent.

Glad to hear aging (good) NVs is something you do intentionally. I just last night opened a NV Laherte disgorged 7/2016, worried that it'd be DOA, but it was anything but, which is good, because I have two more. Trying to drink more Champagne...
cheers, Patchen
