WTN: Carlisle Gruner Veltliner '22....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Apr 08, 2024 11:33 am

Cracked into my latest shipment from Carlisle:
1. Carlisle GrunerVeltliner SteinerMtn/SonomaMtn/SonomaCnty (14.1%; 125 cs) Windsor 2022: Med.dark gold color; very strong GV/white pepper/floral/gardeniasa/spicy slight mineral/metallic/steely some complex lovely lush GV fruit nose; lightly tart very spicy/cardamon very strong floral/GV/white pepper/gardenias very spicy/white pepper light mineral/steely quite rich/lush lovely flavor; very long/lingering lush/ripe finish that follows the flavor; a beautiful expression of Calif GV of the smaargd level; not quite the minerality of Austrian smaargd but the best GV in Calif at a great price. $28.50

More clinerrec from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Mike has long been a fan of Austrian Gruner. When the opportunity to get some planted at Steiner, he leaned on them heavily. As far as I know, he buys the entire crop from Steiner. His wasn't the first Calif GV (Voss was I believe), but was very close to it.
Mike's GV has long been my favorite. This one is particularly rich & lush & probably will age for 10 yrs or more. Stunning Gruner.

Was the Steiner Vineyard named that prior to the Grüner being planted?

Yup, David. Mike was taking grapes (not sure what variety) from them before & convinced them to plant Gruner up there for him.

I wonder if the name was related to that certain Austrian guy...

Tom, do you think you'd have guessed the grape if served that blind?

Prolly not, Jenise. Because of the richness & texture, probably would have guessed Roussanne. But if I looked for the white pepper note, might have guessed it.
