On this centenary of the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, it is interesting to remember that one of the consequences of the disaster was destruction of very large stocks of wine held in tank, barrel and bottle. Much of the wine trade moved away from the city, in particular across the bay.
The wine cartel, the California Wine Association, built a large ageing, bottling and shipping complex near Richmond. The cellars and the company town are still in existence.

It is said that fires were put out using burlap bags soaked in wine.
Raise a glass to the spirit of a great city tonight.
