WTN: Four Older Drew AndersonVlly Pinots....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Mar 19, 2024 3:45 pm

Had these four older Drew Pinots at Pig+Fig last week:
1. Drew PinotNoir McDougallRanchVnyd/SonomaCoast (193 cs; 13.7%) 2009: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong cedary/pencilly/oldRed slight Burgundian bit dusty/OV light cherry/PN quite complex lovely nose; lightly tart some cedary/pencilly/oldRed light cherry/PN bit Burgundian light toasty/oak some complex flavor w/ light drying tannins; very long finish that mimics flavor; a lovely fully mature/complex PN that lost some fruit & starting to dry out on the palate; still an interesting PN that's not yet dead but headed that direction. $45.00

2. Drew PinotNoir BaloVnyd AndersonVlly/MendoCnty (13.8%) 2014: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong black cherry/PN/cherry light toasty/oak slight cedary/pencilly slight earthy/dusty/OV fairly complex nose w/ plenty of PN fruit; lightly tart strong cherry/AndersonVlly PN bit cedary/pencilly/toasty/oak slight drying/astringent some complex flavor w/ light bitey tannins; very long slight bitey finish that follows flavor; a pretty much fully mature AV PN that starting to dry out a bit on the palate; a bit on the downside. $48.00

4. Drew PinotNoir MorningDewRanch/AndersonVlly (13.1%; http://www.DrewWines.com; 7'th & last vintage; Y=0.50 tons/acre;
50% w-c; 33% new Fr.oak) Elk 2015
: Med.dark w/ slight bricking; strong cherry/PN/slight black cherry/cola light pencilly/toasty/oak slight cedary some complex quite perumed nose; bit softer slight tart/tangy rather balanced strong cherry/AV PN some pencilly/toasty/oak fairly smooth/polished slight w-c/peppery some complex flavor w/ modest smooth tannins; very long/lingering smooth/polished finish that follows flavor; probably pretty much right at its peak w/ no signs of drying out or fading; a lovely fully mature AV PN w/ still plenty of fruit; my slight favorite of these Pinots. $55.00

More mollybarq from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. A pretty lovely collection of PNs. They all spoke of that lovely cherry AV PN character. Jason often uses a lot of whole-cluster ferments but it seldom dominates the wines. I guy that knows what he's doing w/ PN and consistently some of my favorite and age very well.

Then you say age very well.
What Cali PNs at that price range age poorly in your opinion?
