WTN: Six Whites & Reds at Susan's BD Party....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Mar 04, 2024 3:04 pm

We had these 6 wines at Susan's BD party with friends on Sat:
1. Vincent Wengier Aligote Ad'OP: Bourgogne (12%; GrapeExpectations/Richmond/CA) Vincent Wengier/Prehy 2022: Med.gold color; very strong mineral/stony bit floral/carnations/melony/ripe/Aligote bit Chablis-like nose; lightly tart/stony/metallic/mineral light floral/Aligote slight ripe/melony bit shallow flavor; med.short some stony/chalky slight floral finish tht follows flavor; a pleasant but rather shallow expression of Aligote but lacks the crisp minerality I like from Aligote; a rather quotidian expression of Aligote; no bargain at $19.00 (KK)

2. Rolly Gassmann Auxerrois Rotleibel de Rorschwihr (12.5%; MeBalP; Botique Wine Collection/Philadelphia/PA) Rolly Gassmann/Rorschwihr 2019: Med.dark gold color; lovely very fragrant floral/Aux/quite spicy bit R-like/muscatty light chalky/mineral rather complex lovely/perfumed nose; bit soft very rich/lush very strong floral/gardenias/Aux/almost muscatty slight chalky/mineral intense ripe flavor; very long/lingering rich/lush ripe Aux finish that follows flavor; a beautiful rich/lush/ripe Aux that is pushng into VendangeTardive terrritory almost Zind-Humbrecht in style ; unusually perfumed for Aux and resembles PinotGris quite a lot; not showing a lot of complexity yet & should go another 10 yrs yet; a terrific Aux at a great price. $25.00 (SFW&S)

3. Ott Rosenberg GrunerVeltliner Feuersbrunner Rosenberg (13.5%; www.Ott.At; MichaelSkurnik/Soysset) Bernhard Ott/Feuersbrunn/Wagram/Austria 2011: Med.gold color; beautiful very fragrant GV/floral/white pepper very spicy slight herbal slight metallic/chalky some complex very perfumed GV nose; fairly tart/tangy rather rich/lush/balanced very strong GV/floral/white pepper/spicy slight mineral/perfumed talc rather complex GV flavor; very long/lingering GV finish that mirrors flavor; a beautiful expression of GV that is quite youthful & still go another 6-10 yrs; beautiful GV showing some maturity.

4. Radio-Coteau Riesling PlattVnyd/SonomaCoast (12.6%; U/U; 146 cs) Sebastapol 2012: Med.gold color; very fragrant R/mango/floral strong Mosel valve oil/petrol fairly complex some Rheingau-like slight herbal/new mown Kansas lawn lovely aromatic nose; some tart/tangy strong R/mango/floral/bit pineapple slight herbal strong petrol/Mosel valve oil beautiful very Germanic flavor; very long/lingering strong petrol finish that mimics flavor; a beautiful expression of Calif w/ loads of petrol & Germanic character; probably not going to get a whole lot better. $nc (JN)

5. Alain Voge AC: Cornas Cuvee VieillesVignes (13%; MeBalP; Adventures in Wine/DalyCity/CA) AlainVoge/Cornas 1999: Med.dark color w/ some browning; beautiful roasted/smokey/pencilly/smoked meats/Rhonish some espresso/coffee rather dusty/OV slight blueberry/blackberry/Syrah quite complex fully-mature Rhone nose; lightly tart rather smokey/smoked meats/roasted/Rhonish/bit espresso bit tired/dried out rather complex flavor w/ light smooth tannins; very long/lingering slight tannic/astringent bit drying out finish; a lovely complex fully mature Northern Rhone nose but a bit tired/dried-out on the palate w/ not a lot of Syrah fruit left; beautiful nose but doesn't deliver on the palate; a bit of a disappointment for such a pedigreed wine.

6. Lagier-Meredith Syrah Mt.Veeder/NapaVlly (14.3%; 420 cs) 2001: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; very intense blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah classic MtVeeder/spicy/peppery strong toasty/Fr.oak rather youthful bit complex nose; lightly tart very rich/mouthfilling strong ripe/blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah very strong MtVeeder/spicy/peppery strong Fr.oak/toasty hard/tannic bit complex flavor w/ ample hard chewey tannins; very long youthful/Syrah/very spicy finish that follows flavor; a very youthful Syrah not showing much evolution; rather hard/tannic on the palate.

More blitterslop from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The Radio-Coteau was brought by Jason. About as fine a Calif R as you can find.
The two Syrahs I had high expectations for but they didn't quite deliver the goods. Both lacking a bit on the palates. Jane O'Riordan brought a TerreRouge Syrah SentinelOak/PyramidBlock 2013 that pretty much saved the red flight. Alas, no notes taken...just enjoyed the thing.
This was just a gathering w/ 8 wine friends to celebrate Susan's 80'th BD. Lots of wonderful apps that Susan put together.

My Lagier Meredith vertical doesn’t go back quite that far, but I don’t think I have ever had a mature one.

"New mown Kansas lawn"--now there's a fun descriptor.

Good notes. And I agree on that aligote. Vapid.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well, Jenise... probably a descriptor you can't relate. And one that changes if you hit a pile of dog $hit!!
