1997 Brunello

by Barry N » Wed Mar 07, 2007 7:13 pm

Hi: I'm a long time reader and first time poster.

I often debate the drinkability of 1997 Brunello's. I have read lot's on the topic as well. My gut and palate say to hold them but, many folks say drink up.

I carried many of these wines back from Tuscany so, I'm having trouble parting with them.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I can speak only of the ones I've tasted, obviously:

'97 Brunellos from Banfi, Altesino, Pertimali, Val di Suga Spuntali, La Gerla, and Silvio Nardi are quite approachable now; they may have many more years in them, but nobody is going to accuse you of infanticide. I'd drink 'em.

'97 Brunellos from Biondi-Santi (a class by itself), Valdicava, Il Poggione, and Val di Suga Vigna del Lago can be drunk now, with pleasure, but my sense is that these will do nothing but improve over the coming decade. The Biondi-Santi, in particular, assuming you are lucky enough to lay hands on some, is probably immortal.

Again, that's my two cents. Your results may vary.
