WTN: A White & An OLd Syrah....(short/boring)

Tried these two w/ Susan over the weekend:
1. Licence IV Blanc Melon de Bourgogne (12%; OldVines/SS; LicenceivWine.com; Martine'sWines/Novato) Domaine Grand Mouton 2020: Med.yellow color; pleasant appley/pear/grapey light stony/chalky slight floral/carnations rather simple nose; fairly tart/tangy rather appley/pear some chalky/stony rather simple bit dull flavor; med.short finish that mimics flavor; a rather simple/dull white pushing the limits of vapid. $22.00/litre (SFW&S)

2. Pax Syrah AlderSpringsVnyd/CahtoRidge/MendoCnty (14.9%; U/U; 3 brls/71 cs) Pax MahleWines/Forestville 2012: An ugly wax capsule that was a bitch to remove; very dark/near black color w/ some bricking; very strong blackberry/Syrah some c-c/black pepper rather roasted/smokey/Rhonish some toasty/smokey/Fr.oak quite complex/Rhonish nose; very tart/tangy rather acidic/metallic some blackberry/Syrah/peppery/c-c some roasted/Rhonish/toasty/Fr.oak rather rough/rugged bit dried-out bit Rhonish/complex flavor w/ ample astringent/rugged tannins; very long rugged/tannic/astringent finish that mimics flavor; a beautiful c-c/peppery/very Rhonish Syrah nose but really rugged/tannic/austere/some dried-out on the palate; will probably never come together & be good drinking; a really lovely nose but pretty brutal on the palate.

I am not sure that Alder Springs is really a particularly good site. I can count on just a couple of fingers the wines I have liked from there, and they have been Under the Wire sparklers. All the rest have been pretty harsh. I wonder if it’s a site that is either better suited to sparkling, or better suited to different grapes to make table wines.
