Gooseberries as a descriptor for Sauvignon Blanc

by Paulo in Philly » Tue Mar 06, 2007 11:29 pm

I recently purchased dried gooseberries at Whole Foods out of curiosity, just because I have seen this as a descriptor for Sauvignon Blanc. WOW! It was tart, crisp and absolutely delicious, and most of all, Sauvignon Blanc in a fruit!!! Have any of you had a similar experience where you had a wine first and then a fruit (or something else) that reminded you of a wine?

Thanks for the tip Paulo. I had no reference for gooseberries before, but I think I'll follow your lead as I love SB and particularly New Zealand SB. I did purchase a currant jam to test as its often a descriptor I see as well and was definitely abl eto relate it to the wine world.

In a word, yes, especially with gooseberries.

Just my 2 oz.,

Absolutely. Your example is one. Another is Gewurztraminer and lychee fruit.

Yep. Lychee is the one that did it for me. Hasn't happened with anything else.

Black currant juice. I drank it not because I was curious but because it is loaded with potasium, something I apparently need to replace after hours of cycling. But with the first sip I knew what TN writers had in mind.

Dates and Chenin Blanc was my answer to Paulo's question in an earlier posting: http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?t=3980

Actually, that posting is doubly timely since the chenin blanc happened to be Ken Forrester Stellenbosch Petit Chenin Blanc, the '06 version of which is the subject of this month's 30 Second Wine Advisor (http://www.wineloverspage.com/wineadvisor2/tswa20070305.php).

We regularly taste fruit wines just to keep ourselves on the beam regarding descriptors. Tomasello fruit wines are great for this. The cherry wine tastes exactly like cherry, etc.

Generally, it's good to browse the produce section in the grocery for wine descriptors. It's hard to use "starfruit" as a descriptor if you've never tasted it.

Speaking of sauvignon blanc, I'm always tickled by "elderflower," which is a euphemism for "cat pee."

I've never had elderflower that I know of, but I have certainly experienced the smell of "pi pi de chat" - both the off-putting  and the enjoyable in a glass of sauvignon blanc 8) .

I'll need to work on the lychee fruit. Knowing my palate, however, I might not enjoy it as much as I am usually (but not always) not that excited about Gewurztraminer; the ones I have had have been too aromatic and too perfumey for my wimpy palate. :?

I just found a lovely picture to share. What I had were dried gooseberries, however.

Give a new meaning to the term chat-eau.

This happened to me with blackcurrants. When I first tried one, I thought it tasted just like cabernet sauvignon.
