Full name: 2003 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese*
Doing an annual check of this screwcapped wine that I bought in a full case. Contrary to professionally published reports the wine was not overwhelmed by sulphur (unlike a 1999 Prum and 2004 Gunderloch I had the other night that smelled like Hades for 30+ minutes), and was not particularly reductive. About 10 minutes in the glass had this wine showing off lots of peach, red apple and pixie-stix lime. Lush on entry but not mouthcoating in its sweetness, the wine packs a finishing burst of acidity that cleans everything up nicely while leaving a pleasant peachy glow. I would normally have expected a wine like this to be slightly shut down by now, but it really is showing identically to the first bottles I had from the case nearly 2 years ago.
Next bottle - early to mid 2007. We'll see if the wine is changing at all by then.
