WTN: Wendouree Shiraz 2003 and Prunotto Barolo Bussia 1999

by Jay Labrador » Mon Nov 13, 2023 4:27 am

A bit of a health scare earlier this year forced me to curtail my drinking; hence the dearth of notes. All the wines I've tasted from April until last month were pretty much spat out so I didn't feel the notes would be complete. Starting this month, I've been drinking a little, but usually just limit myself to one glass each time I do drink, and that's only maybe once a week. Hopefully, I'll be well enough to drink like a normal wino around the middle of next year. In the meantime, here are two I had recently.

Prunotto Barolo Bussia 1999 - Pop and pour. Fine bouquet - roast meat and flowers. Very soft and easy. Touch of sweetness on the attack that turns to an elegant dryness as it fills the mouth. Long finish. Starts to go flat after an hour in the glass. Perhaps a few years beyond peak but still a fine drink. Best to drink up, though.

Wendouree Shiraz 2003 - 2 hours in the decanter before tasting. Lovely floral perfume, still a deep, nearly opaque, purple. Soft and very fine tannins. Still youthful with all the dark skinned fruit and sweet spices intact, and just some flashes of roast meat and leather. What a joy to drink. Gorgeous wine.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Glad to hear you are on the mend!

Wish we had better access to Wendouree here. A buddy of mind got a bunch, but he literally bought on-line from Australia, and had it shipped to the US!

Glad to have you back and healing!
David, it was Salil who introduced me to Wendouree. But very hard to find in US.

Same for me. Luckily I have another friend who made the effort to acquire some.

Thanks, everyone!

Actually Wendouree isn't available here, either. The couple of bottles I have I got from a wine shop in Singapore many years ago. This bottle was from a friend who picked it up in Australia. I haven't seen any bottles for sale in the last decade or so.

The only Wendouree I have ever had was purchased in the gift shop of the Westin Renaissance in Shanghai and consumed somewhere on the Yangtze River. Memorable in every way possible!

Jay, sorry to hear of your illness. Good luck with your progress in healing.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
